Things I’ve Been Learning Lately, vol. XXX

Do you ever have one of those weeks where things just don’t seem to be going right and you cry every other day and you start to question what the heck you’re doing with your life?

Just me?

Okay.

Last week my missionary team and I put on two back-to-back sessions of a leadership conference for all the sophomores in Catholic high schools around West Virginia. We served nearly 400 kids and their chaperones. And then we put on a high school rally. The first session of the leadership conference was hard. I cried at least once each day for different reasons. But the second session went much better, and the high school rally was excellent and low-key. I’m just glad it’s all over.

Next on our list? Travel to Newark, New Jersey for a youth ministry conference this weekend and spend a bit of Friday in New York City! It’s so strange to be preparing for a conference that we don’t have to present or exhibit at. I’m so used to being the one running an event that it’s become odd to just go to such an event as an attendee. It’s nice, though. It feels like a reward for getting through this last week.

Here are this week’s lessons!

  • A little bit of kindness can go a long way. Don’t pass up opportunities to be kind. You never know when they’ll really make someone’s day.
  • Since becoming a missionary I’ve developed a much greater appreciation and love for priests, and I’ve really come to treasure the ones that I’ve met in West Virginia. They’re some of the wisest, funniest, kindest, and holiest souls I’ve ever known. Saying goodbye to them is going to be hard.
  • Having a puppy probably isn’t too much different from having a baby. They’re a lot of work.
  • Speaking of priests and puppies, a priest in full cassock playing with a puppy is probably one of the most precious things ever.
  • Seeing nationally-known speakers in action is one of the coolest things about my job. And when those speakers tell the missionaries that they’re doing something special, that’s pretty neat.
  • Running an event for 150+ people is my worst nightmare. #IntrovertProbs
  • If you really like doing something and if other people tell you that you’re really good at that something, you should probably pay attention to that something. As Mike Patin says, “When you’re juiced up, God is somewhere in the neighborhood.”
  • “Be Thou My Vision” gets me all in my feels. FAVORITE OLD HYMN.
  • Doing mass and Eucharistic adoration three times in a week is a very good thing. It’s probably what got me through last week, to be honest.
